Beyond Lonavla

Khandala & day-trip combinations

Lonavla rarely travels alone. Its twin Khandala sits across the valley, and a ring of forts, caves and viewpoints rewards a longer stay.

The twin town

Khandala β€” Lonavla's quieter sibling

Khandala sits just a few kilometres away, on the other side of the ghat, and the two towns are usually treated as one destination. Khandala is smaller and sleepier, with its own viewpoints β€” including the famous Khandala viewpoint over the valley and the expressway below.

  • Distance: ~5 km from Lonavla market
  • Best for: viewpoints, resorts, a quieter base
  • Don't miss: Khandala viewpoint, Duke's Nose, sunset drives
  • Tip: many visitors stay in Khandala and day-trip into Lonavla
Lonavla vs Khandala? Lonavla has the market, station and most of the food scene; Khandala has the viewpoints and the bigger resorts. For most trips, treat them as one valley and pick a base by your priorities.

Heritage day trip

Bhaja Caves β€” older, quieter, closer to the sky

Just 13 km from town, Bhaja's caves cling to a cliff above the village, some dating to the 2nd century BCE. It's smaller and far quieter than Karla, with a famous stupa, carved reliefs and sweeping valley views from the entrance. A short climb from the road makes it an easy, rewarding stop.

  • Distance: ~13 km from Lonavla market
  • Entry: small ASI fee
  • Hours: roughly 9 am – 5 pm
  • Combine with: Karla Caves (same side of town)

The big trek

Rajmachi β€” the far-side adventure

On the far side of the valley, Rajmachi's twin towers crown a remote hilltop reached by a long, beautiful trek. It's the biggest adventure in the Lonavla area β€” a full day, best attempted with a guide or experienced group, and hugely rewarding for the effort.

  • Distance: ~25 km from Lonavla; trek from Udhewadi or Kondivade
  • Trek: 4–6 hrs each way depending on route
  • Entry: free
  • Best time: October–February
